Elementary Music Education
Theresa Stenzel has been accompanying children in their first encounters with music for many years.
WITH ALL THE SENSES
What is that regular throbbing inside me? How does a feather or a marble feel on my skin? How can I move my body? We perceive the world through our senses. That is why we want to stimulate and encourage them in various games. In our courses, we pay particular attention to the senses of movement and hearing.
MOVEMENT
Pieces of music with different characters encourage us to walk gracefully, sway slowly, fidget uncontrollably or jump around exuberantly. Music and dance are directly connected. We move with the music and we hear and interpret the music through our bodies. In the courses, we encounter simple dance forms and learn to move freely to music.
SPEAKING AND SINGING
Before we associate a spoken language with word meanings, we perceive its musical parameters. Spoken language has a rhythm, tones and is characterised by a particular timbre. But when does speaking become singing? In the courses, we discover which sounds, tones and melodies can be elicited from our voices and combine music and language in communal singing.
MAKING MUSIC
How can we create noises and sounds? By making music together with drums, claves, rattles and xylophones, we create rhythms and melodies. We also become little researchers of music history and ask ourselves what different instruments there are and how their sounds differ. We challenge our ears and encounter music from different eras and cultures.
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT
Listening, moving, singing and making music together gives children the opportunity to sensitise their senses, develop good body awareness and access their own voices. Children are encouraged to express their imagination and creativity artistically. They learn to find their place in new situations and within a group structure. What is the significance of my own actions and how do they fit into the group activity? They learn to listen and hear each other, to take centre stage and to take a back seat in the group. The children learn to take responsibility, to act independently and to treat themselves and others with empathy. And best of all, they enjoy learning, because every song they sing and every note they play is a sense of achievement!
